Cannabis and video games

Can you cultivate a better video game experience by consuming cannabis?

Thanks to improvements in technology, the rise of the smartphone and the growth of indie gaming, video games are more popular, accessible, and stimulating than ever. So what happens when you infuse your favorite digital pastime with cannabis? Find out with Myxed Up!

Game Time: Myxed Up with Cannabis

The Princess, Luigi, and the Myxed Up MushroomWhether you’re a fan of the latest gaming trends or stick to the classics, video games are one of our most popular pastimes for a reason. Not only do video games stimulate our imaginations and provide us an escape from the monotony of the day-to-day, these also provide gamers with a feeling of control that usually comes with the satisfaction of having learned—and mastered—a particular skill set or gameplay scenario.

Imagination also plays an important role here; in a world filled with uncertainty, in the virtual world, a gamer can be whomever or whatever they’d like. From zombie-killers to dragons or renegade soldiers. When it comes to cannabis and video games you’re only limited by your imagination- and how much weed you have at your disposal.

One major factor affecting our online engagements and video game engagements, is the lack of real world consequences, especially when you make a mistake. For example, in a video came, you can build your own empire, jump off of a bridge, or lift an entire school bus on your own because there are no “real life” factors at play that would result in negative consequences if you fail. Instead, you have the luxurious option of taking another toke and using as many lives as you need to develop a winning strategy.

Getting Paid to Play Video Games and Smoke Weed?

Did you know that there are professional gamers out there making hundreds of thousands of dollars just by playing video games? Professional American gamer Johnathan Wendel (Fatal1ty) did just that. Considered by many as “the first, and best, electronic competition player ever,” Wendel has earned over $450,000 in prize money during his career playing First Person Shooter games like Call of Duty, Doom 3, Counter-Strike, and more.

Wendel isn’t the only gamer to hit the big time. In fact, all eight of the highest paid video gamers in the world average almost half-a-million dollars each in annual prize money winnings. In addition to their winnings from tournaments or competitions, many of the top-tiered gamers also have some form of sponsorship or promotional income they earn passively or by playing in paid forums.

Can Cannabis Improve Your Game?

While more study is needed, some researchers believe that cannabis and gaming can be good for you. This is because video games, particularly newer ones, can help improve your hand-eye coordination while cannabis has been found to deliver significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in lab studies. Together, the combination of reflex exercises and cannabis have the potential to deliver therapeutic benefits when it comes to lowering stress levels and exercising your brain.

Video games and cannabis may also help those coping dementia or Alzheimer’s by helping improve short-term memory retention. According to a test study performed by the Groningen Mental Enhancement Department in the Netherlands, scientists found that use of cannabis while gaming led to increased memory retention amongst Alzheimer’s patients.

According to one researcher:
“All the test subjects played increasingly challenging games each day, but half the group was also administered smoke. Would you believe that the marijuana test group scored 43 percent better memory retention than the control group? It was a far greater benefit to the marijuana-administered group than we could have imagined."

The Benefits of Meditating with Cannabis

Combining meditation with cannabis is a centuries-old practice.

From reducing your stress levels to helping you live longer, the list of benefits experienced by adding a daily dose of meditation to your day are widely acknowledged, if not practiced. But what about combining meditation with your favorite smoking ritual?

Meditating with Cannabis

Enhancing Your Meditation Practice with Cannabis

Did you know that stress has been considered a ‘major health problem’ in America since 2007? From work, money, and housing to the future of the nation, more than half of the country’s adults are stressed. Moreover, that stress is also taking its toll on people’s well-being by contributing to health problems, straining relationships, and even reducing productivity at work.

Regardless of what your stressors are,  living in a state of perpetual mental or physical stress causes our bodies to increase production of a hormone called cortisol. Best known for helping fuel our ‘fight-or-flight’ response during a crisis, cortisol plays an important role in everything from metabolism to our sleep cycles. However, if your body is in a constant state of stress or anxiety, too much cortisol can lead to a number of health issues, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Migraines
  • Weight issues
  • Digestive issues
  • Problems remembering things and concentrating
  • Heart disease

How People Are Coping with Stress

While more than half of Americans get physical to cope with stress, the use of meditation has been increasing since 2008. In addition to helping people cope with stress, meditation has also been found to decrease stress levels and even improve symptoms of stress-related medical conditions, like IBS, PTSD, and more.

Self-care is also one of the critical components driving cannabis use and legalization. From helping people combat the symptoms of chronic medical conditions, like epilepsy, to providing relief from sleeplessness, nausea, and more, cannabis helps people in a number of ways.

While getting baked before meditating may seem strange to some, cannabis and meditation have a history that goes back thousands of years. In fact, cannabis has been a component of spiritual practice by religious groups for millennia, including practitioners of Hinduism, Sufism, Taoism, and even sects of Tibetan Buddhism, among others.

Myx Up Your Meditation Practice with Cannabis

The use of cannabis during meditation allows the consumer to access an elevated and more open state of mind. For example, if you’re someone who copes with negative thoughts or anxiety, these states of mind can induce stress and all of the negative consequences that come with living in a fear state. By replacing your negative thoughts or coping with stress through mindfulness and finding peace through meditation, you may be able to lower your stress levels and even improve your health.

As many lovers of cannabis know, cannabinoid receptors are present in very high levels in the regions of the brain that mediate thoughts, behaviors, and mood. When we consume cannabis, cannabinoids like THC, CBD, and even CBN interact with these receptors and producing euphoric, relaxing, and enervating effects. No matter your tolerance and consumption preference, it’s important to find a strain or product with the right potency and terpene profile for you. For example, consuming high THC flower can sometimes cause anxiety or hyper
stimulation, especially when combined with specific terpene profiles.

In addition to finding the right cannabinoid and terpene profiles for your practice, it’s also important to figure out what form of meditation works best for you. For example, some meditation practices focus on breath and body mindfulness while others, like gazing meditation, invite you to find clarity and focus through using your senses.

How to Consume Cannabis Before Meditating

Once you’ve decided on your product and your form of meditation, the next step is determining how you’re going to get elevated before you find your ‘Zen’.

Find Your Flow with Flower

Smoking your favorite strain just before you begin is a simple and classic way to infuse your meditation practice without the risk of getting too high too fast. While a freshly rolled joint or blunt may seem appealing, a simple glass pipe is a practical--and portable--way to consume cannabis before meditating. Simply pack your preferred flower strain into your favorite pipe or one-hitter and take a hit or two, focusing on a calm, smooth exhale. Once you start to feel the effects of the cannabis. Set the pipe aside and begin your meditation exercise. Remember, the
goal of using cannabis for meditation isn’t simply to ‘get high,’ it’s to access an elevated and more conscious state of being. If you’re in a state where recreational cannabis consumption is legal, you may also want to consider taking your practice outside and letting nature be a part of the experience.

Dab Your Stress Away with Meditation

While high-THC products like cannabis concentrates or vape oils aren’t typically recommended for use during meditation, innovation in the marijuana industry has given the curious consumer more options than ever. In addition to terpene-rich concentrates, CBD dabs and isolates have also begun to appear in store and dispensary shelves. In addition to mediating some of the anxiety-inducing effects of THC, CBD is also known for its potent mood lifting effects, making it the ideal addition to any cannabis-infused meditation practice. Fortunately, dabbing with CBD is just like dabbing other concentrates; you just need the right concentrate oil rig or pipe.

Take a Cannabis Tea Break Instead

Other than smoking cannabis, one of the oldest ways to consume cannabis, is by brewing it into a tea. Cannabis tea is not only a great way to get some use out of your old stems, it’s also a method of consumption that will produce gentler psychoactive effects, which are particularly desirable for entering a meditative state of mind. It’s also more discreet and easier on your body than smoking or dabbing.

Myxed Up Marijuana Tip: If you’re conducting your meditation in a public space, like a park, you may want to consider looking for a private location or discreet consumption options like vaporizer pens or edibles instead.

Marijuana Makes Everything Better, Including Meditation

From boosting your mood to helping you center and connect with what truly satisfies you in life, meditation is just of the many activities that cannabis can myx up to bring you less stress, more joy, and better days.
